Litelab Corp. LPB-801 Maxi Pinbeam

There were 34 of these large fixtures outlining the dance floor. About half of them have survived, but are in bad shape. Most of them were in the area of damaged roof caused by the Tornado that tore apart the rear half of the building in 1995. They have been subjected to the "elements" for three years.

History...The term "Pinbeam" or "Pinspot" has been derived from a 70's disco effect called the "Rainlight". Most Disco designers used the rainlight to accent the perimiter of a dance floor. This light would throw beams of light accented by a fog/smoke machine in a tight pattern the patrons would have to walk through to enter the dance floor. Pulsations was no different, as the lighting equipment was bigger and bolder!!

1) Evaluation: The first photo shows the light in the exact condition since it was removed from Pulsations. The original finish was semi-chrome reflective(Silver tone). Note the years of nicotine/hair spray/gunk and rust that has built up on it.

2) Taking it Apart:

We will start by removing the lamp/transformer cover, the transformer itself, the rotted AC line power cord, and the fuse holder. All of these items have become very brittle due to the heat these lights put out. All of these components will be replaced by our electronics lab technicians. The aluminum housing has started soaking in a 50/50 mix of Oxi-clean and water and re-assembled:

3) Re-Assembly:

The chrome aluminum housing has come out very nice from it's bath. New fuse-holders have arrived from Digikey, New Par-64 Very Narrow Spot lamps have arrived from Philips ($81.00 each) and new AC power cords have been modified with all special connectors. The original transformer is in great shape, so we will use it with new mounting hardware.

4) Final Results:

This has been the first time in over 11 years since this light has operated. It is now again a very happy and healthy robust fixture that will last another 25 years! See you at the next reunion!!
